Mother’s Day Special – Mum’s Best Cleaning Tips

To celebrate Mother’s Day on March 26th, Green Sparkle have been remembering some of the best cleaning tips and tricks we have learnt from our Mums.  We’re sharing a few of them here – but feel free to comment below and let us know about the cleaning tips your mum taught you!

Odds and ends
Keep a basket or box at the bottom of the stairs to collect things that have been brought down during the day. At the end of day, take them all back upstairs in one go – and save yourself running up and down the stairs all day!

Storage ideas
Save glass jars of jams, pasta sauce, soup or fruit and use them to store rice, pasta and spices. Or why not make your own jam, pasta or soup and use the jars as an eco-friendly storage solution? You can even decorate the jars to add an extra special home-made touch.

Sticker stains
Eucalyptus oil is great for removing the gluey mess left behind by stickers – and it’s natural and eco-friendly too!

Put the clothes out to dry
When the weather is fine, always hang your clothes out to dry rather than using a tumble dryer. Not only will you save money on your electric bill, but you’ll be helping out the environment too.

Microwave cleaning
We’re not really fans of the microwave but if you do use one, then for a non-toxic and eco-friendly way to clean the microwave, add the juice of a fresh lemon to a cup of water and microwave for five minutes. The steam will disinfect the surfaces and loosen the dirt ready for wiping away with a microfiber cloth.

Bad smells
Using baking soda is an all-natural and powerful way to get rid of bad smells. For things like Tupperware, just dilute the baking soda with warm water and leave to soak.

Broken glass
To safely and easily clean up smashed glass, use a slice of bread and gently press over the shards. It’s great for picking up the smaller bits which a dustpan and brush will miss. Of course, be careful not to cut yourself!

Pet hairs
One for pet owners.  Wear a damp rubber glove and wipe your hand over surfaces to instantly pick up stray pet hairs.
